The first stage of healing
After full-arch implant surgery, some swelling, tenderness and temporary changes to eating are possible. Your clinician gives individual advice on medication, rest, cleaning and when to contact the practice.
Eating and looking after provisional teeth
A softer diet may be advised while implants heal. Follow the specific cleaning instructions for any provisional restoration and avoid assumptions that a fixed temporary bridge can tolerate normal biting immediately.
Long-term success is a shared effort
Healing times and restoration stages vary. Regular reviews, carefully managed hygiene, smoking advice where relevant and realistic maintenance planning all support a healthier long-term outcome.
Why Recovery Timetables Differ
Placing implants alone is not the same as removing several teeth, grafting bone and fitting a provisional bridge at the same visit. Your surgeon should give instructions for the actual procedure planned. Ask when to return for review, who to contact outside opening hours and what would delay the next stage. Do not use another patient's recovery timetable to change your own instructions.
Plan the First Few Days
Arrange transport and support according to the instructions given for your procedure and any sedation. Have suitable soft foods available, allow time away from strenuous activity and take prescribed or recommended medicines exactly as directed. Do not add or stop medicines without appropriate advice.
Swelling, Bruising and Discomfort
Some swelling and bruising can be expected after surgery and may increase before it settles. Your team will explain what is normal for your treatment and how to use pain relief. Contact the practice for uncontrolled pain, persistent bleeding, worsening swelling, fever or anything that concerns you.
Eating During Healing
Provisional full-arch teeth may look fixed but the implants and surrounding tissues are still healing. Follow the recommended texture and avoid hard or sticky foods until your clinician confirms progression. Chew carefully and do not use the provisional restoration to test what it can tolerate.
Cleaning a Full-Arch Bridge
The space beneath a bridge and around implant components needs daily cleaning with the aids demonstrated by your team. Early instructions may differ while tissues heal. Water flossers, interdental brushes or specialist floss can be useful in selected designs, but technique and timing should be personalised.
From Provisional to Final Teeth
Healing and integration are reviewed before the final bridge stage. Fit, speech, appearance, bite and cleanability may be assessed and adjusted. The final restoration still needs professional maintenance, and components can wear or require repair over time.
