CONFIDENCE FROM THE FIRST VISIT

Children’s Dentistry,
thoughtfully delivered.

Children's dentistry combines examination, prevention and age-appropriate treatment to support developing teeth and a positive relationship with dental care. Baby teeth matter for eating, speech and comfort; problems should not be dismissed because they will eventually fall out. S3 Dental welcomes family enquiries at Haywards Heath, Hinchley Wood and Eltham, with appointment options explained by each practice rather than a promise of immediate NHS access.

Eligible NHS children's care: no patient charge, subject to availability · Final fees depend on your individual plan.

YOUR TREATMENT JOURNEY

What to expect.

01

Prepare For The Visit

Tell reception the child's age, symptoms and any medical, communication or sensory needs. Explain the appointment simply and positively without promising that nothing will happen. Bring relevant medication information and let us know about previous difficult experiences so the team can plan appropriately.

02

Examine And Explain

The dentist works at a pace appropriate to the child and explains what they are checking. Assessment includes the teeth, gums and development; X-rays are used only when clinically justified. Parents receive clear findings and an opportunity to discuss worries about brushing, eating or pain.

03

Prevent And Review

The plan may include brushing support, dietary changes, fluoride varnish or fissure sealants where indicated. If treatment is needed, the dentist explains the options and how cooperation will be supported. The next review interval depends on risk; complex needs may require an appropriate referral.

Building Lasting Habits

This is ongoing preventive care, not a single treatment with a fixed lifespan. Teeth and risk factors change as children grow. Help with twice-daily brushing using age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste, and encourage spitting rather than rinsing afterwards. Keep sugary foods and drinks to mealtimes where possible. Sealants and fillings need checking over time. Ask for advice specific to your child's age rather than relying on adult products or routines.

Prices And Care Options

Eligible NHS dental care has no patient charge for children under 18, and for those under 19 in qualifying full-time education. This exemption does not guarantee an appointment or cover private care. Ask reception to confirm capacity and the booking route. A separate private children's fee is not published in our current guide; obtain the exact price before booking. Alternatives to a proposed procedure depend on the tooth and diagnosis, and can include prevention, monitoring, restoration or referral.

GOOD QUESTIONS, HONEST ANSWERS

Things patients often ask

When should my child first see a dentist?

Arrange a visit when the first teeth appear, or by their first birthday. Early familiarisation allows prevention advice and helps identify problems before symptoms develop.

Are you accepting children as NHS patients?

Availability changes by practice. Contact your chosen S3 Dental team for current capacity; please do not assume an adult family member's appointment automatically provides a place for a child.

What if my child is frightened?

Tell us before the visit. Calm explanations, short familiarisation steps and a stop signal can help. More complex anxiety may need specialist or community dental support.

Do baby teeth need fillings?

Sometimes. The decision depends on decay, symptoms, cooperation and how long the tooth is expected to remain. Untreated infection can cause pain and affect wellbeing.

Can you assess crowded teeth?

A dentist can monitor development and explain when an orthodontic opinion may be helpful. Referral does not guarantee NHS braces; eligibility and timing require assessment.

What should I do about a dental injury?

Seek prompt dental advice and tell us whether it involves a baby or adult tooth. Never reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth. Serious facial injury or breathing difficulty needs emergency care.
