YOUR TREATMENT JOURNEY
The dentist checks your mouth, remaining teeth and any existing denture. We discuss the number of teeth, materials, support and appearance, including whether extractions or other treatment are needed first. An immediate denture after extraction has different fit and adjustment needs as the gums heal.
Impressions or scans and bite records help the laboratory create the appliance. Depending on the design, trial stages allow the dentist to check the bite and give you an opportunity to discuss tooth position and appearance. Several appointments may be required rather than one fitting visit.
At fitting, the dentist checks comfort and explains insertion, removal and cleaning. Eating and speaking take practice. Follow-up adjustments may be needed for sore spots; do not file the denture yourself. Contact the practice if pain, persistent rubbing or difficulty using it continues.
Dentures can serve for years, but gums and supporting bone change over time, even when the appliance looks intact. Relining, repairs or replacement may become necessary. Clean dentures daily with suitable products and a gentle brush, avoiding hot water that could distort them. Clean remaining teeth and gums too. Usually remove dentures overnight unless your dentist gives different short-term instructions. Attend examinations even if you have no natural teeth.
Private partial dentures start from £950 and complete dentures from £1,500. Confirm whether the estimate covers one arch, the chosen materials, adjustments and any extractions or later reline. Payment arrangements must be agreed with the practice. Alternatives may include a bridge, implant-supported replacement or leaving a suitable space. Implant-retained dentures are a separate treatment requiring assessment, surgery and a different budget. NHS dentures may be possible where clinically necessary and appointments are available.
