In briefA practical guide to combining separately arranged NHS examinations with private hygiene appointments or a hygiene-only plan. This guide explains the choices, limitations and questions worth discussing with your dental team.

NHS and private care can be separate

Where practice arrangements allow, patients may choose private hygiene appointments while continuing to arrange eligible NHS examinations separately. The two routes have different fees, terms and availability.

What a hygiene-only arrangement includes

Some practices may offer a hygiene-only preventive arrangement or individually booked private hygiene appointments. Ask your team which visits are included and whether an ongoing monthly option is available.

What private hygiene cannot guarantee

A hygiene-only plan does not create, reserve or guarantee an NHS appointment. NHS examinations remain subject to local capacity, NHS rules and appropriate clinical arrangements.

The Dentist and Hygienist Have Different Roles

A dental examination assesses teeth, gums, soft tissues, symptoms and treatment needs. A hygiene appointment focuses on preventive support and gum care within the clinician's scope. One does not automatically replace the other, and the recommended interval for each can differ.

What to Confirm Before Joining a Plan

Ask how many appointments are included, which clinician provides them, whether X-rays or emergency visits are covered, how missed appointments are handled and what happens if the monthly fee changes. A plan for routine care is not the same as comprehensive dental insurance.

NHS Capacity Remains Separate

Paying privately for hygiene does not reserve an NHS examination, change NHS eligibility or guarantee future NHS availability. Book each route according to the practice's current arrangements. If continuity is more important than a particular funding route, ask reception to explain all available options.

Who May Value Hygiene-Only Care

This approach may suit someone who already has a separately arranged NHS examination but wants predictable private hygiene support, or a patient with implants, aligners or a gum-maintenance need. Suitability and visit frequency should still be based on clinical assessment.

Keeping Records Joined Up

When care is provided by different clinicians or under different arrangements, make sure each knows about relevant treatment, medicines and changes in health. The practice should maintain an appropriate clinical record so advice and appointments form a coherent care plan.
