What to do immediately
Hold an adult tooth by the crown, not the root. If dirty, gently rinse it briefly; do not scrub. If you can reposition it safely, do so. Otherwise keep it in milk and seek urgent dental help immediately.
Important safety note
Never reinsert a baby tooth. If there has been a head injury, uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing or another significant injury, seek emergency medical assessment.
Practical steps to remember
- Handle the tooth only by the crown
- Store in milk if it cannot be repositioned
- Never reinsert a baby tooth
If severe swelling affects breathing or swallowing, call 999 or attend A&E immediately. For out-of-hours urgent dental advice, call NHS 111.
