What professional teeth whitening can do
Professional whitening can lift the natural shade of suitable teeth and reduce the appearance of some everyday staining. The response varies between people, so your dentist will discuss the likely result rather than promise a particular shade.
Why an assessment comes first
Before prescribing whitening, a dentist checks your teeth and gums, asks about sensitivity and reviews visible crowns, veneers, fillings or bonding. Decay, gum problems or other concerns may need attention first, and whitening may not be appropriate for everyone.
How dentist-supervised whitening works
For a prescribed home-whitening system, accurate impressions or digital scans are used to create close-fitting trays. You receive the appropriate whitening gel and instructions explaining how much to use, when to wear the trays and what to do if sensitivity develops.
Sensitivity is usually manageable
Temporary sensitivity can occur during whitening. Following the prescribed amount and wear schedule is important; using extra gel or wearing trays for longer does not guarantee a better result. Pause treatment and contact your dental team if symptoms are uncomfortable or persistent.
Crowns, fillings and veneers do not whiten
Whitening changes the colour of natural teeth but does not lighten existing restorations. If a crown, veneer, filling or bonding is visible when you smile, your dentist can explain whether its shade is likely to remain suitable after whitening and whether any replacement should be considered later.
Keeping your result looking its best
Results are not permanent. Smoking and frequent tea, coffee, red wine or strongly coloured foods can contribute to new staining. Good oral hygiene, regular dental care and occasional professionally advised top-ups can help maintain your result without overusing whitening products.
